St. Mary's Basilica is also known as the "Crown of the city of Gdansk." It is Europe's largest brick church in the style of Gothic and the third in terms of volume temple in the world built of brick. Its construction lasted 159 years (1343-1502). Temple rests on 27 pillars, can accommodate up to 25,000 worshipers.
St. Mary's Basilica invariably survived several centuries, but in 1945 the church partially burned. Inside the basilica there are many monuments of painting and sculpture (including the beautiful Madonna of Gdansk, Pietà, Altar Coronation of the Virgin, altar of St. Barbara, Table Ten Commandments, astronomical clock) and modern (the band images and epitaphs of the XVI-XVIII centuries).
